No no. Not b/c Al Gore invented it, but for various "other" reasons.. One of them might be the fact that they funded the early development of it.

EU and other countries want a share of the pie so to speak. Internet policies, addressing, etc.

I can see their argument. As countries become more dependent on the internet, they don't want some crazy US policy completely screwing them over. They want the UN to take over the internet.

If US has funded "most" of the internet, I can see their side as well. We pay for it, and others want part of it??.... But from what I understand they only funded the "early development" of the internet.. Not the continuing evolution.. Which I am presuming was funded by the idiots that lost a lot of money during the stock crash than anything else ;).. Well and all the countries collectively since the infrastructure is local.

So, that being said, I'd give the nod to the UN.. What do u guys think.

no one can own the internet

if the US shuts down everything on their side

the world will still revolve and Europe and the rest of the world will still sit down to dinner while our servers and telephone lines and satellites are working just fine

by the way a few people have claimed the title of inventing the net

No one can control the internet and how it works anymore, and the goverment can't own it just because they paid for the early stages of the development. We pay for it and companys set the servers up and own them. So where does our goverment get the idea that they can just take them servers and companys and control them? It's a free enterprise kinda thing now isnt it?

They can:

A stalemate over who should serve as the principal traffic cops for Internet routing and addressing could derail the summit, which aims to ensure a fair sharing of the Internet for the benefit of the whole world.

At issue is who would have ultimate authority over the Internet's master directories, which tell Web browsers and e-mail programs how to direct traffic.

That role has historically gone to the United States, which created the Internet as a Pentagon project and funded much of its early development. The U.S. Commerce Department has delegated much of that responsibility to a U.S.-based private organization with international board members, but Commerce ultimately retains veto power.

Ok. You guys don't seem to be reading the article fully. Please do.

I am not talking about the physical infrastructure of the internet. More of its policies.

Obviously, the mere fact that this is a real world issue should automatically tell you that something is up..

In anycase, if you guys want to educate yourself on how the domain allocations and what not works, "and who controls them", please read:

No single person can ever control the internet, all it is, is a large network conected together on a fast backbone.

There is absolutely no way that ANYONE can shut down the net. Given, parts of it can be shut down, but we are talking about millons upon millions of networks interlinked into each other. It is way out of America's league. There are two ways of effectively shutting down the web, both of which are impossible. The first is to hack into and shut down every single service provider on the planet, the other is to destroy every satelite orbiting the planet.
