yeah iraqi desert, not high desert of california which isn't near any big cities such as los angeles that would be a target IF california were to be attacked

Is it possible for the Homeland Security Threat Warning system to be any more of a bureaucratic waste and an embarrassment to our nation?

Apart from telling me whether i should take public or private transport to work in the morning, does this Security Threat Warning actually give us any idea on what the government is doing about it.
Eg. Curfews, Miltary Patrol in Civillian Streets, etc. etc.

Or is this some thing like my LED Fans on the side of my PC case. Just there to stir up hot air and look pretty.

Its gotten to the point here in the US that when entering a govt building just saying the word "bomb" in casual connversation often means being escorted out of the building and/or being arrested and interrogated(no im not kidding).
I beleive that.
Yesturday (6 hours before the UK Bomb Attacks), I was reading in the news paper that it now illegal (Arrested and fined up to $30 000) if any one makes a bomb joke in airports. Security is getting sick and tired of people making sarcastic remarks like "Yeah, the bomb is in my bag".

And they are thinking about moving that into other public places too.

just shoot us all damn. they are taking this way to far and they forgot the meaning of privacy. When i had to go to the airport to pick up my dads friend i saw a poor ladies thongs get searched. i was like thats just rediculous.

I agree Shoobie, the color chart is a joke, but it makes old people who still believe our government is working in "our" best intrests feel safe.
...
I think the color chart system is more a symbol of the bureaucratic overhead in America, than evidence for another paranoid "government take-over" thing...

threat level hasnt changed everywhere, Ive been in numerous govt buildings today which display that threat warning sign and its still that funky yellowish green its been for months
The fact that it has changed at-all is fact enough. In short, the whole idea of an iterated threat level system is bogus. Though still nearly worthless, a percentage system would have been better. We will never be truly green because there will always be the possibility of some nut blowing stuff up. Doesn't have to be a foreign terrorist. Hell, I could go nuts and blow up my car tomorrow. Could the government predict that? Heck no. And when the level is red, does the National Guard storm the streets, squad cars alerting citizens to stay in their homes and all businesses shut down? No. Though we've been to red several times since 9/11, they were hardly worth it. If this system was to be followed, Red should be used for instances like the Cuban missile crisis, where nuclear war was about to break out any minute, literally.

pretty safe to say that like the "war on drugs" the "war on terror" is just as much of a joke and everything related to it including the silly warning system
The "war on drugs" has died off for two reasons. One, lack of funding to the appropriate protecting branches (namely the US border patrol, and the US Coast Guard). Second, it died off sharply in some areas (there's a conspiracy path for you folks) and in the public areas it became "unpopular" to support the government (the current state of the public today). So we had a major drug problem, the people called for government help, the government stepped in, the people said "woh, the government", and backed off. So the government can't do the job it was supposed to do because the people didn't like the government cracking down on things. Welcome to democracy. Go ahead and blink, nothing will change.

Saying "bomb" in a government building is never a bright idea. With the country on alert for bombings, you would expect the security to be more reactive concerning such sensitive things. In short, you'd have to be an idiot to do such a thing and deserve to be pommeled a bit.

Ive seen it happen, welcome to 1936 germany all over again............."sir may I see your papers please?"(insert german accent here).
You saw it, huh? Didn't know we had any 70+ year old posters in here.
Anywho, if people would just stop being idiots, there wouldn't be so much of a problem. I can't tell you all the stupid things people will do in airports, and I'm not surprised that security measures have increased to try and compensate. Other countries don't have as big a problem, and it's because their people mostly follow the damn rules. If the sign says "take off your coat" you take off your coat. If it says "do not enter" you don't enter. It's plain and simple. And yet most Americans still can't pay attention and remember their kindergarten lessons. So they have to be lead around like children.

Really? Damn, I knew I should have gone to the airport that day!... :p

The main difference was besides the whole jewish killing and invading part, hitler was a better leader.

No the war on drugs is actually stronger than ever if you measure it by the amount of $$ spent.
The three most important fronts against drugs (police, border patrol, coast guard) have seen significant and increasing drops in funding. The "war on drugs" is basically at a loss, and the amount of money put under the "war on drugs" is meaningless since it doesn't go to the right places.

Not to defend the CIA, but the CIA is a large, multi-faceted organization, with many departments dealing in many different sections of society foreign and domestic. Because the narcotics devision is believed corrupted, does not mean the whole of the CIA is corrupted.

As far as the comparison of germany in the 30's to the US now, there are numerous similarities that are undeniable
This should be interesting...
Well, come on...let's hear those similarities.

When you examine Hitler and the Nazi Germany of WWII, there are only a few evils to be found. Granted, those few evils were major, but the supreme-race and such was/is an ideal shared by far more than just the Nazis. And at least Hitler had the balls to do something about the problems of Germany, rather than just debating about it and throwing money in holes.
