OK... so i've realized lately that there are no good places to store files to share/post for free/easily. I thought about starting my own server. Has anyone ever done this? What does it require? Do i need a domain?

I honestly just want to partition a part of my hard drive so that I can host files instead of using places like PutFile or photobucket.

The free FTP server that comes with Windows are just basics and really not that good with little feature to play around. There are good third party software for Windows if you're used to configuring things in that OS. I would recommend Linux also, this website http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_suse_10.1 will give you a good idea about the advantage of Linux over Window when it comes to free software and the flexibility that open source has to offer.

Depending what you mean by 'share' you could just use a gmail account. Store all the files you want to share on there and tell the people you want to share with the password.

lol.. probably one of the silliest sharing ideas i've heard yet :p

agreed... I just want something (i dont care if its FTP or HTTP) to be able to link my stuff to. Say for instance i want to take a screenshot and post it here... I want to just put it on my "server" and link to it. Or for instance i have a song i want people to listen to, or a video to embed... blah blah.

Linux would be fine, but i'm not that great with it. I also don't have a way to connect it to the internet for the computer it would be on. My network, sadly, is all off the phoneline. There is not a foot of ethernet in my house. Linux does not support drivers for HomePNA phoneline network adapters. Yes, i could get a wireless bridge, but no money.

May I ask what version of Windows you are using on the system you want to setup?

If you run Windows 2000 Pro and XP Pro, this link is a good guide to get started for setting up a basic FTP server. http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1491

Unfortunately, XP Home can't do it. Therefore you'll have to find a third party software that best suite your need. There are free and commercial one.

Here's an example of a freeware:

Here's some commercial one with more features:

It's much more simple if you go the FTP route rather than setting up HTTP. FTP is basically used for file transfer and will be much easier to get setup.
