Hey. I just found a link on SpyWare BeWare! to a petition to make spyware/adware illegal. Come on, everyone, help out and sign it!
No Spyware and Adware Laws Petition

Here is the text of the petition:
To: US Congress

Owning a computer is just like owning any other valuable. When someone damages your property it is considered a crime. When adware and spyware are involuntarily placed on your computer it damages the performance and can make your computer virtually unusable.

What is Spyware and Adware?
Spyware and Adware is software made by publishers that allow them to snoop on your browsing activity, invade your privacy, and flood you with those horrible popups. If you are like most users on the internet, chances are you are probably infected with these applications.
Why does Spyware and Adware affect every internet user?
· All information you enter via the web can be intercepted
· Unauthorized sites can add themselves to your desktop (icons)
· Unauthorized sites can add themselves to your internet favorites
· Your browsing activity can be tracked and monitored
· Unwanted toolbars and searchbars can attach themselves to your browser without your knowledge or approval
· Your personal information can be sold to other parties without your knowledge or consent
· Your default homepage and settings can be hijacked so you can't
change them
· These malicious components not only invade your PC so they can not be removed, but take up your hard drive space and slow down your PC!
-source NoAdware.net

So why do we allow companies to keep making spyware and adware? The government should stop spyware and adware so browsing the internet is no longer something that you have to fear.

If you would like to see adware and spyware stopped, Please sign this Petition and let your voice be heard.

Sincerely,

Please sign and let OUR voice be heard. Liz

Linux may NOT be immune for long...

Other Environments
Linux

To date Linux-based platforms have mainly been the victims of rootkit attacks and simple file viruses. However, the growing number of publicized vulnerabilities means that the increased number of users switching to Linux will not remain untouched by new malware.
Handhelds

PDAs are now almost household appliances. Virus writers have not been slow to take advantage of their growing popularity. the first Trojan for Palm OS appeared in September 2000. The first proof of concept virus for Pocket PC, Duts, was slower to arrive, finally appearing in July 2004. So far there have not been any serious virus outbreaks in the world of handhelds, but it is only a question of time. Once virus writers decided that information saved on handhelds is worth accessing, malware for these devices will undoubtedly evolve rapidly.
Mobile Phones

Mobile phones have come a long way, and are now both complex and widely used. These two factors are bound to attract the attention of virus writers, particularly with the advent of smart phones, which effectively have computer functionality. The first proof of concept virus for smartphones running Symbian OS appeared in June 2004. The only missing factor is commercial use - once virus writers identify a way to make money by exploiting cell phones, viruses will inevitably appear.

For comparison's sake, Coverity found more than 1,000 defects in the Linux kernel Version 2.4.1 in 2001, at a time when the source code contained 1.6 million lines of code.

HELL YEAH!!!!

The only bad thing about this is that I make a lot of money just by cleaning up spyware / adware off people's computers.

But the good thing is that I might be able to sit down and get some other long term business stuff done.

I'M SIGNING!!
I am also spreading the word too.

Lets keep this thing rolling!!!!

I know there lots of bugs and bad code in linux, still, its a whole different ballgame. The way software is currently written for linux its not likely that someone like me will ever even be close to anything with spyware or adware in it.Viruses, sure, it could happen, but the sheer diversity of linux often makes even those impotent.I dont have to worry about my browser being hijacked, or having a filemanager/browser all in one app with root priveleges. All the software I use is open source and I dont even bother with updates anymore, no need to, whats already there works, and works quite well.Ive spent countless hours trying to hack into a target box I have setup, most OS's these days are pretty robust, its user stupidity that does most of the damage LOL.
