School used student laptop webcams to spy on them at school and home

As somebody who works in a public school district who actually sets up laptops (about 90% with integrated webcams) that go into students homes, I cannot fathom or even remotely understand how someone would be so incredibly... stupid... to think this was a good idea.

I install anti virus software.
I install filtering software.
I make sure those pieces of software are password protected to make any changes to them - uninstallation included.

But that's it. That's as far as I go. That's as far as anybody should go when it comes to students, education, and severe invasion of privacy.

And the sad part is.....the school distract will probably blame it all on the tech dude and it'll still happen again

EDIT: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100219/ap_on_re_us/us_laptops_spying_on_students

And now they are trying to cover their butts by saying they only done it for lost or stolen laptops which is complete ********...

if that's the only reason for activating it then why was they punishing kids for stuff they done at home? The school doesn't even have it on file that the activated laptops were ever reported stolen either!

Yea the midden has hit the windmill, the FBI will want to know
A) Why -
B) How
C) Authorised by who.
D) Some children kept the computers in room's where they where in a state of undress so possible child pornography or indecent images of children - this is a somewhat scary thought for all the parents.
E) Wire Tap illegal wiretap.

So yea the book followed by all the volumes of law and the bookcase followed by the library will be thrown at the whole school district.

I can see child pornography for sure, and illegial wire tapping... Heard about this on the news the other night, I lived in PA, and I can say, the school systems there do suck, and tend to break a lotta laws...

In my opinion, check the logs on all laptops, see which ones was accessed at the same time over n over, and if that happened to the same laptop at around the same time, then possible child pornography, as a lot of people well, do things at around the same times, all the time...

But yea, nothing will happen, the school will operate as always, a technician gets fired, and life continues with gov controlled orgs spying on us and controlling us...

Ever hear of lo-jack? I know most laptops support it.... Far less legal trouble.
IMO, the administrators should be prosecuted with something along the lines of, illegal wire tapping, and invasion of privacy or something........

Seriously, people get fired up when a child predator is on the loose, yet, a school official can possibly stare at children nude, and the parents end up opposing the parents that ARE suing the school system that allowed this to even take place?

I think I said in a previous post, this does NOT surprise me, I have been around enough schools in the coatesville area, to know, that they do nothing legal.

What the school did is disgusting and completely inappropriate, I honestly don't know what they were thinking when they decided to do this. On the other hand, suing the school is greedy and short-sighted, they (the school) should face criminal charges.
