hmm... Have been reading about some of the pre-amp outputs on some of these receivers. Like I said - I have been out of the loop for a while. But, if I remember correctly ...if a receiver has a pre-amp out. Then I could use my old Soundcraftmen amp for powering my front 2 speakers ( 4 ohm spica50's) - both linked below. Those old Soundcraftsmen amps kick butt and are indestructible and the Spica speakers are the best imaging/midrange speakers I have ever heard. Have also read /been told that the new receivers with pre-amp outs have something called a "trigger" which turns the amp(s) connected to the receivers pre-amp on/off. Ever hear of that?

these are my front left/right speakers:

Powered Subwoofer is a SVS - seems to do the job- NOT big on boomy bass as stated above.

So, if , and I repeat if, I could use my old Soundcraftsmen amp - have it turned on/off with the receiver via the receivers remote, that would be a great 5.1 setup for both music and movies - switching to 2.1 when playing vinyl or older stereo music.

That's a lot of amp for not a lot of speaker. Yes some newer amps have zone 2 preamp out for just that, and most people use it for bi-amping their front towers. That's exactly what I'm doing, but the zone 2 amp is built in to my Yamaha. Idk how the triggering would work via the RCA output for the preamp out though.

Ya, I don't know how the "trigger" works either. Yes, it is alot amp/power for a smaller speaker , but i think it is clean, mosfit power, and these are 4 ohm speakers.

ok , found out more info on the "trigger'= apparently some of the new higher grade Marantz,etc. have a communication port on their ARV and pre-amps that connects to amp that have the same port that allows the preamp/AVR to turn the amp on/off. So, no , it wont work for me old amps. Back to the drawing board. No way am I affording expensive audio separates.

yes it does, unfortunately my living room layout ( picture windows/fireplace, archway to dinning room,doorway to kitchen, stairs to second floor,etc. ) where we watch TV is impossible to get square to the TV/speakers- so not worth really going all out for Atmos. 5.1 is not really room corrected either but sounds pretty good.

So here is a comparison of two Yamaha AVR's ( the RX-V681 and the RX-V781) - if your a Costco member the 781 is renamed a 7810 just for Costco and is currently on sale for $429. I may just jump on this.

Not sure what the differences are yet between the 781 and the model that PP linked for me a RX-V683BL ;

Edit: I did find this finally :

Trying to figure out why somebody would need a splitter at their receiver.

Well what I'm referring to is the mirrored HDMI output.
