is it me, or is my teacher wrong here

if the answer is 3, then it really should be asked like:

[7 + 2(5-9)²] / [(4+1)²-3(2²)]

with brackets around the whole numerator

otherwise, you could say it is:
7 + (32 / 13)
which is technically right (but ≠ 3)

what year level is this anyway?

Hmm........ if you simply use the precedence rule you will get 3 (parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtration - in that order). I recall doing a ton of this stuff in my C programming class (where the precedence rule follows the exact same method used in algebra, though with the addition of a modulo operator).

One gripe I have is that a parenthesis should be placed around the first portion in order for it to be written correctly.

Thank you for using a REAL resolution on your computer, none of that 1024x768 crap,

Real men use 1600x1200 and above. :D:D:D

:( I think im going to go buy a new monitor now

*tear.

lol

Apokalipse is right, if the answer is three, then the problem is written incorrectly.
The correct answer as it is written is 9 and 6/13 (or 123/13)

don't you just hate it when text book questions have mistakes, really hinders learning.

just for another opinion

7 + 2(5-9)^2 / [(4+1)^2 - 3(2^2)]
= 7 + 2[(5-9)(5-9)] / {[(4+1)(4+1)] - 3(2^2)}
= 7 + 2(25-45-45+81) / [(16+4+4+1) - 3(4)]
= 7 + (50-90-90+162) / (25 - 12)
= 7 + 32 / 13

I'm gonna get a decimal answer, and my calculator seems to agree with me...I suspect there is a bracket that either should be there, or should not be there which is messing up the order of operations, but none of those options give the correct answer

ok I see now, apok is right, the entire 7 + 2(5-9)^2 should be contained in a bracket in order for this to work, otherwise you end up dividing 32 by 13 and then adding 7 rather than adding 7 to 32 and then dividing by 13. So your teacher is wrong

what DID your teacher say the right answer was? 3?

I got D.. I didn't check it over tho

alright i checked it over and got a dif answer that wasnt on there.... 100.8 if im wrong... I DONT care i shouldn't be doing this im on summer break!

EDIT: New answer... 11.076923076923076923076923076923 LOL alright i give up im done with this until i have school... i did good in this unit too
