One problem with languages is that they have to be able to change and evolve to new concepts and changing cultures, which means that you have to tack on more and more to it, and it ends up being inconsistent a lot.

A bit like if we had to keep using a modified version of DOS today.

Ah, k. I keep finding reasons to learn the international phonetic alphabet. For example pronouncing Dr. Seuss' name (it's 'say-oose' rather than 'say-uss' as I thought it was, or just 'soose' as my friend thought).
 
It IS 'soose' lol, at least that's the way I've heard everyone say it (including on a children's book-reading tape thing). In fact I'm pretty **** sure that's correct.
