Alright these two links explain my theories that a computer located on a workgroup can access a domain controller that is part of a domain but with the same name equally the domain name.
As you can see from this link the Win2003 server can access the XP machine from computer management even though XP is not part of the domain and vice versa. Take a good look at the computer managment windows and the system properties. I blank out some account name because I didn't want people to know my real name. 2003 was able to change XP Pro password!!

This is 2000 pro accessing server 2003 just in the same situation as XP with the workgroup and domain.

As you can see from those three links that there are erros in the user and group. Thats because the issue was resolve with 2003 and XP machines. However the problem still remain with the client 2000 pro machine. This is what I am talking about when XP access 2000 pro and can view and change it's account remotely. This is when they are in the same workgroup.

As you notice from the computer name is "Tom" which is my brother computer which is running 2000 Pro.
I was unable to join the 2000 pro machine to the domain for some **** reason, so I couldn't do that XP to 2000 from workgroup to domain thing. However from what you are seeing, XP can access computer even from a workgroup, and with 2000 pro flaws it can changes it's password.
