$800 Canadian on my desktop 2 years ago.. 2.0 ghz anthlon XP, 512 mb ram, ATI Radeon 9000 128mb, 80 gig 7200rpm..

in 1999 we paid around $3500 AU for a system with a P3 500, TNT2, 128MB PC133, 12.7GB HDD, 4x CD burner, 8X DVD ROM, 200W PSU, 17" monitor (this is the one descent part it had) and 2.1 speakers

since then, it had upgrades of all IDE drives: a 40GB HDD which cost about $150 AU (about 3 years ago), $75 for a 52x CD burner (about 2 years ago), $72 for the DVD burner (about 3-4 months ago) and recently, $359 on a system upgrade, to an Athlon XP 2800+, 512MB PC3200, MSI KM4M, Geforce FX-5200, and a case with a 550W PSU (it was actually supposed to have a 500W one) although the voltages jump around a bit, so I might replace it
I also might upgrade the video card to a 9600 XT or even a 6600

the sad thing is, for $359, we now have a system that kicks the crap out of the system we paid $3500 for
