I believe that if people in a community like this do not wish to hear profanity, they have a right to express that desire and have it honored. Some people just don't like profanity, and I respect that.
Now, about profanity being a marker of ignorance. I am a Corrections Officer, profanity is like a second language to me. Convicts communicate using profanity the way you and I use common slang in everyday life. Using profanity in this setting isn't just common, it's required if you're going to communicate with convicts on a level they respect. It's not ignorant, it's just a fact of life in prison.
I have been working in prisons nearly my entire adult life, and at first, I had a real problem with using profanity all the time. I cussed just as bad at home as I did at work, and THAT is a sign of ignorance. When I got married and more so when I became a father, I began to see that profanity had it's place and I needed to realize that. These days, I watch my mouth when I leave work, and I feel I am a better person for it.
I guess what I am saying is that profanity in and of itself is not a sign of ignorance, it's like anything else, when we use it indiscriminantly, it becomes an act of ignorance. But, this is just my humble opinion.
