Convincing parents to build computer...

Well I convinced my parents to let me build the computer. However, my dad was grilling me about virus scanners and stuff. Is the free virus scanner any good (AVG or whatever it's called)? If not, what virus scanner do you suggest and how does the subscription work?

AVG is very good besides one issue. It has a tendency to be not as user friendly as other programs.
