AFP: China vows to slow reliance on executed inmates' organs

BEIJING — A Chinese health official has vowed executed inmates will no longer be the main source of organs for transplants in three to five years, as the country sets up a donation system, state media said.
China has long vowed to reduce its reliance on death-row inmates for organs, but high demand and a chronic shortage of donations mean they have remained a key source -- a situation that has generated heated controversy.
But Huang Jiefu, vice health minister, said the government wanted to abolish this practice altogether and was in the process of setting up a nationwide organ donation system, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
"China... promises that within three to five years, it will completely change the abnormal method of relying mainly on death row inmates to obtain transplant organs," Huang was quoted as saying in the report late Thursday.

am i the only one who thinks this is a bad idea? lol .... the murderers and rapists dont need their livers any more

In principle it's a great idea (IMO, though ofc it does set a horrendous precedent), however China occasionally executes people who disagree with the government. That bit is the main issue, to me.

Well, in theory socialism's the best form of government, in that no one needs for anything (so there's no starvation, no crime, and so on... in theory). However, since we're humans, what with our greed and instinct to 'game' the system for our benefit, it doesn't work :p

Not that China's actually communist, anyway.

China is far from truly Communist, I am going to take a rapid step back to talk about the topic at hand however.I am all for a prisoner who is sentenced to death having his organs reused to help people survive disease, infection and infrmaty, I carry a Doner card in my wallet.

What I am glad to see a end of is Students who speak out agenst the regime, being tissue typed and the organs sold on the black market, and this is happening regularly. I am personally aware of 3 current politicians who have had transplants bumped up the list using a typed organ and many influential people who have themselves or family members bumoed up the transplant list or had the operation performed in South America or south east Asia, bue mostly because of this. I find the whole thing as disgusting.

I will say this though, We should all be willing to donate out heart, lung liver, etc by default and have to opt out of donating anything, It's not a popular opinion but I seriously believe in it.

Definitely agreed. Wales changed to that system recently I believe; you have to opt out (I'm not sure how) of having your organs donated to others if you die.

They've executed people with invented crimes purely because they want the organs.
