I had a similar problem many years ago and used JB Weld on the drain plug. Had to let it sit for 24 hours before adding oil, but it didn't leak. Then one day I discovered the oversize plug and that worked until I did an engine swap. Best bet is of course a new pan. And I wouldn't worry about the shavings too much, the oil pickup goes almost directly into the oil filter usually. Might want to remove the oil pump when you change the pan and replace it as well if possible. Cheap insurance.
