Honestly, for what you will be doing that laptop will be perfectly fine, no problems

You COULD add a large screen to the laptop for when you're at home; most laptops at least have a video output. Then you use the laptop screen when you need it to be portable, and hook it up to the larger monitor when you're at home. Best of both worlds?

Generally, no. Try it out with a friend's monitor first if you're concerned. Even consider bringing the laptop to wherever you intend to buy the monitor and ask if you can hook it up to see how it looks with your desktop; that way you'll get it tested.
