I'm really considering joining the army or the marine corps. Was wondering if anybody here has and what their input on the whole experience is.

Army enlisted right here
Field Artillery - Multiple Launch Rocket Systems

Infact I will post my last live fire from MOS training.

If you have any questions on the Army/Basic/or AIT
Talk to me. I have only been in for 8 months and I have VERY detailed and FRESH memories of basic and AIT lol.

Sounds like fun, are you shipping to iraq any time soon?

Anyway, i have questions that'll prolly be addressed by a recruiter in the future but for now -

is basic training included in your 8 year contract?

how do you go about advancing through the ranks? like what differentiates an E-3 from an E-4?

If you have no clue as to what you want your MOS to be, how exactly do you go about picking one?

I am active duty. Might be going to Afghanistan soon.

I signed for 3 years. But I have a total obligation of 8 years inactive reserve, meaning if a MAJOR war were to break out, after I seperate from the Army, they can call me back and tell me that they need me. So no matter how many years you sign for you really signing for 8 in fine print. The day you sign on the dotted line is the day your 8 years start counting down.

I can tell you right now, 3 years would be your best option. Most MOS options are 3 years minimum(military police and other long training agenda MOS fields are 5 year contract minimum) You can enlist for 6 years... Not recommended though.

There is a 2 year option but it is 2 years of service AFTER you complete BASIC/AIT. And only a handful of jobs are available.

Going thru the ranks is complicated. Most recruits are E-1 (E-Fuzzy). Some are E-2 due to exceptional physical agility that they passed a PT before even leaving for basic (17-21 years old, 35 pushups, 47 situps in 2 minutes and a 2 mile run in under 16:36)

Also you can be promoted for ROTC, and referring other recruits to join. You will see the occasional E-3 or even E-4 in basic. They either have college under their belt or extensive ROTC. Usually E-4's are master degree holders and are completing basic just to turn around and go to OCS (officer canidate school) But in basic everyone is an E-1, dumb private... ****. I have been in for 8 months and I am still an E-1!!!! (i have a ****** battery)

But to get promoted in your duty station, score high on your physical training test, shoot well at the range, have correspondence course hours under your belt, have no article 15s (discipline), and be a high speed low drag soldier. E1-E4 are pretty much given to you after a certain point of being in long enough, anything after that e5-e9 is all done by boards and promotion points. Meaning you will NOT get promoted unless they have space to promote you and you DESERVE it.

I personally, went to goarmy.com and browsed thru all of the jobs. There are alot more than there are listed on the site. But you will get a general Idea.
The army has ALOT of jobs. Just browse for now. If you have anymore questions just drop a post.

Oh my, those preliminary PT stats seem a little low. :] Heh, my weight lifting teacher is a retired marine and when he talks about their min standards (what im shooting for) they are a lot more beasty.

Anyway, the main thing I'm worried about is leadership. I'm by all means not confident in my leadership abilities, and hence is why I'm hesitant about shooting for special forces or the like. But how much does it come into play if your a lowly private? not much I assume? haha

I'm thinking about doing community college first.. at least just a year of it. Partially just to eff around with my friends/get in better shape, maybe learn how to fight. But does having an associates degree help at all? Would it be worth my while to stick around another year to finish it off?

Score high enough on your ASVAB and choose the right job and you can go in up to a E-5. If your scores are good enough, look into being a nuke (Nuclear Engineer) for the Navy.

If you have a college degree underneath your belt you will get at least E-3 off the bat.

Learning to fight..... it depends what kind of fighting. Army combatives (it is a mix of different styles of fighting im not sure what they are though)yes that will help you. Anything else would just be for personal gain and not help you in the military. (ie promotions etc etc)

If your thinking about SF but not totally sure.. Go 11B (Infantryman) and after basic/OSUT/AIT ask yourself if your up for the challenge of air assault school or airborne school.

After doing all of that you can then determine if your up for the SF Selection process, 24 days of pure ****. But If you do make it, your a one tough SOB. After the selection process you go onto 2 years of weapons, tactical, warfare, electronics, communications, language, etc etc training. After that your all done you will be automatically become E-5, which only 2 years of service.. e5 is pretty good. Just dont jump stright into the army as a 18X (SF canidate)

Well as luke said i am also enlisted in the Army but in the National Guard component and have been for 2 years, i hold the rank of E-3 and will soon get promoted to E-4.

Im am also mlrs, 13P (fire direction specialist) but will soon be changing to another mos. I am facing a possible deployment to iraq as well.

Pt is a big deal, and even though those are the minimum stats, drill sergeants will be on your *** to make sure you achieve double. If you want good training, Fort Benning is the way to go.
