My gf has an HP laptop. All of her usual programs work online, however AVG doesn't sense an internet connection to achieve the updates.

AVG was removed, then re-downloaded. Same deal.

The connection was wireless. Network settings showed me that the connection was 5/5 bars and rated excellent. I'm unsure of how AVG can't sense an internet connection......

ANY clues?

Ohhhh shit... I have no idea what she has. It's some DSL carrier. DAMNIT it's on the tip of my tounge yet I have absolutely no idea. Imagine that...

She's on her way back to college now. I'll ask her to do the same when she gets up there.

Regardless, this isn't "normal." The entire PC worked just fine online, except AVG updates...

*edit* She was at home when we tried it. She's on her way to college, totally different network there. Just to clear up confusion if there was any.

her pc is likely infected with some malware which modified the hosts file , when she'll be back do these

1) scan online on these sites
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/

2) goto start-->run put this and hit enter
notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
the only entry that should be there is "127.0.0.1 localhost" if you see others delete em and save when done

3) get hijackthis http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip
click "do a system scan and save a logfile" open a new thread at http://techist.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=126 and attach it or copy & paste

When I open a new thread at the specific link you posted, then what? Are there experts that will follow up with how to fix my specific problem or something? Or is the deleting the unneeded lines in the notepad file what fixes my problem, and posting a new thread is just another +1 for the satisfied individual review?

that link is the forum section where all hijackthis logs are being posted its specially intended for that , yes experts (maybe even me if ill be around) will tell you what items to remove to make the system clean , deleting items from the log in notepad wont do a thing its only a text file , removing items can only be done from hijackthis

This happened before. We sent the laptop back to HP, it was crashed, tested, and windows and whatnot was reinstalled.

Yet, it's happening again.

What the f*ck?
