Angry My computer works slow (no general advices like "throw it to garbage", please ):)

Hello !
I need help !!!!!!!! (

My computer works slow, and I am trying to find out why. Can anybody help me? It works slow especially when I am listening to music. I guess that this is becauseof the small amount of RAM, because of the low performance of the mainboard and because I have some programs installed (a LAN chat, yahoo messenger, norton antivirus). I would also appreciate if anyone could tell me how I can tweak it, with wich program, and what hardware changes would be desirable. The configuration of my PC is this:

mainboard: ECS K7S5A
processor: AMD XP 2000+
128 DDRAM
HDD: Maxtor 40Gb
sound on mainboard
LAN on mainboard
OS: WindowsXP with SP 2

Thank you very much,

Webmaster Jedi,

Well ,thats a decent system. The problem is that windows xp takes up much RAM , so the other applications seems to lag behind.

1) You can follow this link and tweak your current system. http://www.techist.com/showthread.php?threadid=10692

or

2) Completly format your system, and install windows 98se and work with it.

Thank you for your advice!
I like WinXP very much. I'd rather make some hardware upgrade, than changing it with Win98. Anyway, I had Win2000, and it also worked slow sometimes.. Maybe 256 more DDRAM would be a nice upgrade.

I already checked it for addware and spyware and it was OK.
You are right. Windows 2000 is faster and it uses less resources. I had it installed before WinXP, but now I wouldn't uninstall WinXP, to install Win2000 agian. I did some tweaks to my WinXP+SP2, and it works a little bit faster now. I guess that SP2 for WinXP is also one cause for the slowness of my computer. I have some reasons to believe that...
Unfortunatelly, I suspect that the mainboard and the small amount of DDRAM (128) may be the main cause of the slowness. Don't you think that too ?

I would uninstall Norton and get another antivirus. Norton is a huge resource hog.

What I would do is this:

first go in your control panel and uninstall all the things you do not use.

use a program like Window Washer and get rid of all the temporary internet files, cached files, etc.

use spybot search and destory and use ad-aware to get rid of all the spyware/adware you have on your system. NOTE: make sure you update.

i agree with TheMajor. uninstall norton, and get a better one. 2005 is out now. scan your computer

use diskdefragmentor. this will make your programs run smoothly.

the last thing, go to start, run, and type in "msconfig" without quotes in the box. click on the startup tab and uncheck everything except, systray and your virus scan.

apply, ok, restart.

if it is still slow, you may need to upgrade your ram.

Don't use Norton AT ALL...there are free ones you can use. Like TheMajor said, Norton is a resource HOG.

As far as the list of free/cheaper better a/v software, here is the list: http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml

The best one is NOD32 http://nod32.softwaresecuritysolutions.com/

The best free ones are:
avast! 4.5 Home Edition http://www.avast.com/eng/free_software.html
AVG Free Edition: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

NONE of these clog up your computer as badly as Norton does. Liz
