Default Budget MoBo/CPU/DDR package

Hi guys, I'm a newbie & a broke college student. I want to put together a budget system. I'm gonna strip out my Mobo & just pop a new one in with a new CPU & Ram.

I think I'm decided on the Athlon 64 3200 Winchestor.

I looked at this motherboard: Chaintech S1689

I don't know much about ram. Can someone give me recommendations? Does my mobo/cpu combo look ok.

Looks like a nice board.

Only thing I would warn you about is this:
If you intend to use dual channel memory, as you probably know, you need to install the ram in matching pairs.

I would also recommend though, yo be on the safe side, that you buy ram thats on the compatibility list for this mobo. I had a look at the list from the link you provide but theres nothing there.
You could try downloading the manual or contacting their tech support to find out.

Worse case senario, if you can't get list, then Crucial or Kingston are normally a safe bet for the RAM.

The CPU is good. I have the same one. I'm not sure how good the mobo is, though. I would go with a brand name one such as Gigabyte, Abit, Asus, DFI.

For RAM get PC3200 of also brand name. Corsair, OCZ, Kingston.

Chaintech is a decent brand. Get another stick of kingston ddr 256 and you should be all set. That's a pretty good budget system bro.

Thanks for the responses guys. After doing a little more research, I think I'm going to get this board, the MSI K8N Neo-4:

It's only $20 more & has the nForce 4 chip that I've heard good things about. Also, I've heard the 3200+ Venice overclocks better than the Winnie, so I"m going with those 2, with Kingston Ram, don't know how much yet. If I have enough, I wanna get 1 stick of 512MB.

Thanks for the feedback.

Never get any kind of Chaintech product. Focus on brands such as DFI/Abit/MSI. That MSI mobo you like, its a good choice. Alot better then that chaintech.

Finished With TF.
