Using any Antivirus alone will not remove all infections.

Anti-virus not a cure-all

The sheer magnitude of the issue of data security has rendered anti-virus programs obsolete and ineffective, says a new Frost & Sullivan report.

“As such, no single technology can successfully serve to safeguard the network from the multi-dimensional nature of the menace of cyber crime,” it states.

The study found security vendors are striving for a more holistic approach with hi-tech endpoint protection.

Martha Vazquez, Frost & Sullivan senior research analyst, says: “Dominant vendors will continue to add enhanced features to their product lines, while smaller vendors will continue to concentrate on research and development in order to offer better endpoint security products.”

Lindsey Mc Donald, analyst at Frost & Sullivan SA, agrees. “There is no single solution that can completely safeguard the network. And this is attributed to the growth in the mobile market. If you have a network with a laptop and a server, then multiple security mechanisms for each layer need to be secured.”

Cyber war

Jayson O'Reilly, McAfee regional manager for Africa, says the bar has been raised in the ongoing war between cyber attackers and security vendors. “In the last few years, the battle has been one of volume, with the malware authors looking to be successful by creating such volumes that the security industry struggles to keep pace.”

He says McAfee's Artemis has been designed to combat this trend. “We are seeing threats that both try to disable security solutions, but also use root kitting techniques to make it harder to detect and remove them once they have a foothold. And with the recent conficker worm, we saw the return of threats using multiple techniques in a blended attack.”

Arthur Goldstuck, MD of World Wide Worx, says: “We've seen there has been such a broad range of different types and sources of attack that it's highly unlikely that one suite of software would provide full protection. One of the key areas of security that is under-emphasised, generally speaking, is that of user education in terms of e-mail and Internet browsing habits.”

According to Megha Kumar, IDC research analyst, hackers and spammers are using more sophisticated techniques to bypass security systems. “Curbing cyber crime will remain a challenge since, many times, the attacks are carried out by zombie machines that are being controlled remotely by the attacker.

“Many large vendors are trying to work alongside governments in different countries to not only monitor Internet traffic, [but to] form laws against cyber crime and alert governments of perpetrators fuelling Internet crime.”

Irnest Kaplan, MD of Kaplan Equity Analysts, says there is consolidation of functionality from smaller security specialist players being absorbed by the bigger vendors. “The financial crisis will probably create a driver for more stringent security measures and regulation.”

this could be classified as diversity in defense. you want to implement different types of anti-hacker mechanisms. passwords, firewall, software patching, anti-virus. these are all different mechanisms that someone must bypass to exploit a system.
