Unwanted many pop ups of syntax error. Please help

Hi,
Whenever I open internet browser in my laptop. Many unwated browser opens up saying syntax error in their browser line.These are 50-100 in 1 min. I really feeling frustrated. Can somebody help me removing this?
Also would reformatting the laptop help removing the virus from the system?
What all things are needed to reformat a laptop? I have window xp installation CD. Is there anything else needed?
Also can somebody explain me step by step how to reformat the laptop?
Please help.

But I am not able to work on my laptop becuase it keeps on opening unwanted browser "syntax error" until I log off. Is there any other way of stopping it?

Go to start, run, type msconfig and press ok. Go to the startup tab and click disable all and reboot.

Now my laptop does not even booting. Can you please suggest how can I start it. I have window xp installation CD. Shall I reformat it. If yes how?

XP Repair install
Please read carefully and make sure you followed the warning links before initiating the Repair Install.
