Im floored that Avast! isnt even on the list. I use an older version of ZoneAlarm(6.5.714) sitting right next to the latest ver. of Avast! and I havnt had a virus in over a year now. Actually nothing gets through, I stopped running my antivirus software like 6 months ago because It took hours and it always came up with the same "Congratulations, your system is virus free!" or whatever that line is. I run it on three computers here. And Ive never run windows anything! Those Freaks! Nor Norton, or Symantec. Commercialized Crap. I dont even use Internet Explorer. It always seemed like I was opening a Garage Door to every virus, trojan, adware out there. Call me a conspiricist if you must but except for windows itself......if its even remotely connected to Microsoft.....SHUT IT DOWN! Bill Gates would burn his own family to know what your doing on your computer.

Avast isn't on the list because this is top rated firewalls not antivirus ;). There's already a top AV list, and Avast is on it ;).

Avast! On access Scanner seems an awful lot like a firewall. It sure screams out at me when Im on the right porn site. LOL :D
"aw man!, but I dont want to abort connection.....*sigh*"

Outpost and Kerio have always been two of the most potent firewalls but personally I'm content to rely on a hardware firewall & windows firewall.
I know they won't save me if my PC gets infected but... They say prevention is better than cure, personally I say avoidance is better than prevention.
Block everything that could possibly be dangerous and don't download any executables from untrusted sites (absolutely no warez ;)) .. you're not going to get infected unless you're extremely unlucky. Even if that did happen I would spot it pretty darn quickly - What's running, Hijack this, windows forensic tool chest, etc... I know if even if the lowliest of files so much a sneezes.

There is a lot of crossover between the two these days, either one can't do its job with out some properties of the other. but yeah there is still a distinction.

I am with Ste and Gurusan. I use my Router with built in firewall. :p

I've used Ashampoo's Firewall in the past, but these days I just use the Firewall that's built into my router. No need for anything else as long as your Net Savvy really. I always make sure I turn off the Windows Firewall as well.:)

Really? I always keep windows firewall on to give me some protection from the LAN - besides, you might be surprised how quickly a skilled hacker might get through your router firewall - i've seen it happen, I don't know how mind you. but to be fair very few people will be targeted by a human hacker, unless they have some visible assets like a server of some kind that might get them noticed.

Hmm, like you say, that could happen but is unlikely unless I'm running some valuable stuff. The only thing network orientated in our router is the network.

As for not using the Windows Firewall, I just don't see the point. We run 3 computers (used to be four), all connected to the router and none of them have EVER got a virus, trojan, worm, etc. Sure we get spyware, but none of it has been malicious, usually just MSN cookies and the like, easily removable.
