Such thing as TOO MUCH protection?

I have an admitted obsession with trying to keep my computer "clean". I run CCleaner, Ad-Aware, and Malwarebytes often. I do a Kasperky online scan every now and then as well. I just found an automated Hijack This log reader that I'm going to try.

I think that I am running too many spyware programs on start-up, however, which is of course, sucking up resources. I have Windows Defender, Comodo Internet Security (I just turned off the Comodo Safe Surf toolbar), and SuperAntiSpyware. They all run at start-up, which is most likely overkill. Comodo is my firewall, so should I just run that and not the others? I am pretty certain they all do the same thing. Can anyone confirm that for me?

If I just run Comodo, then I can still run the others manually, like I do Ad-Aware, etc. Because I'm neurotic about my computer like that. :nerd:

It would probably be better to do those scans manually once a week or so.

Just make sure you never have two different AV type programs, they'll fight like rabid dogs.

Don't remove the wrong things with hijack this... It can cause some serious system stability issues if you remove the wrong objects...

Awesome. I don't think I have EVER had my start-up list this pared down. As of this moment, the only things I have running are:

Vista sidebar (with a calendar and CPU monitor)

Messenger (which I hate but sadly, need for work)

Apoint (which I understand I need for my touch pad)

Comodo Internet Security (my firewall and spyware program)

I'm strangely thrilled by this. :p

It's funny how I had programs running because they looked important. But I took a few minutes this morning to actually look them up and found out that none of them were necessary for start-up. It's something I'd been meaning to do for a long time and I'm glad I finally got to it. I also suspect that yes, I had some "rabid dogs" fighting with my over-use of programs.

I did the online HT log and it came up with a ton of red (delete now) messages. I didn't, of course, but naturally it was a hint that I need to have the log looked at. I believe there is a HT thread here at Tech Forums, so I shall head over there right now.

Thanks for the help and for assisting in my computer cleaning!

Kmote, everyone else from work is on Messenger. Does Pidgen interface with it?

Yes, and many more.

Just wanted to thank you for the Pidgin suggestion. I like it thus far and it has SO many options and tricks. I'm still getting used to it but I want to check out all of the plug-ins and see what is offered. And it's working perfectly with the others who are on Messenger, no glitches at all. Thanks again.
