spanking new pc

alright, so i just got a brand new pc with a clean install of windows 2000, i need some help with what to put on it for protection.

i'm thinking either NOD32 or AVG and Avast for antivirus
for firewall zonealarm
then spyware ill put on ad aware, spyware guard, spybot, spyware blaster and... that's it i guess

oh and firefox.

sounds fine, Id go with NOD32 very good indeed then AVAST as user interface is better than AVG and just as reliable finding viruses. Also for spyware download microsoft anti spyware beta software, and bazooka I dont know if its actually anygood but cant hurt to have more spyware scanners

Adding a lot of programs to your system will in effect slow it down. Keep it optimized and only install what you really need.

One spyware program (if you even really need it)

One anti-virus program

One firewall program (again, only if you really need it)
-Are you behind a router? If so, that should come with a better firewall than any software can provide.

Good choice on Firefox, better browser for security, and in my opinion, easier to use.

The best defense on security is common sense. I hate seeing these posts where people say the reason you have spyware on your computer is because you don't have a firewall in place.

Try to keep from clicking on those tempting ads and flash banners for free stuff, and stay off porn sites. You should be fine

I agree with evrything he says except the spyware part and router part, A software firewall would be great because it blocks outbond threats and a router doesnt, Also zone alarm seems to eb phoning home talkign to its servers without ur knowledge this is kinda disturbing cause they could steal ur identity this way, i use outpost its easy to use and very powerful, Aslo no spyware program is the best u should always have many i use spybot ad awarepersonal, webroot spy sweeper, spywareblaster, MAS, and my system is faster than ever. Oh yeah also get system mehcanic itll come in handy for when ur system gets cluttered it sped up my system by like 300% just make sure u get the pro vs. And also process guard it protects all ur security programs incase any nasties want to disable them.

If the system is new why not just put windows xp on it because it will be more secure to begin with in my opinion. Also I'm not sure how good microsofts support for it is now.
