Scanning issue

I don't understand why my antivirus can't scan password protected files. I'm currently using Kaspersky and I used NOD32 before and it had the same issue. Is this the issue with all antivirus scanners? If it is, what happens if a virus is a password protected file? The antivirus won't scan the file and a virus would be on your computer without you knowing about it.

I use Avast, and it scans password protected folders.

The small 850KB ones off Limewire are viruses.
