Hey, I've posted this on another tech forum and no one was able to help me out. It's a tad long, but bear with me. I've downloaded and used just about every spyware detector and destroyer. I'm on an HP using Windows XP Home Edition.

Here's the problem. I have Spyware Doctor, and everytime I run a full scan it finds spyware ranging from high to low. I delete it, and when I restart my computer and browse the internet it comes back. Here's an example of what Spyware Doctor finds:

Known Bad Sites C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\A5RSDO6W\abs_adserve[1].htm High
Advertising C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\R23HHTBN\optn=1[1] Low

I've used Spybot search & destroy, microsoft antispyware, spyware blaster, ewido, CWshredder, adaware, Macafee Virus scanner, online Virus Scanner, and they all don't find anything during their scans (in most cases). I've also used MRU Blaster, and Easy-Cleaner in order to delete that hidden content.ie5 file and the index.dat file in my Downloaded Internet Files (where all of the Spyware Doctor detected files are located). I've had someone look at my HiJackThis log file and it looks ok. Here's the log:

Does anyone know what is plaguing my computer and how I can get rid of it?

It appears those findings are all in the Temp Internet Files.

You can manually get rid of the temps by:
Go to "Start" -> "Run" and type in the box: cleanmgr.exe
Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press "Ok" to remove:

*Temporary Files
*Temporary Internet Files
*Recycle Bin

Reboot and do an online scan at one of these:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com
http://www.pandasoftware.com

Allow the scans to fix what is found, and do a FULL system scan.

Reboot and check to see if those entries still are found.

I'd have Microbell check your log.

Good luck

Your log is clean. The entrys your getting are located in the TEMP folders as Piney said. Your getting this because you have minimal protection on this PC and your security settings are to low. As was suggested clean out your temp folders. Here's a program that will do it for you...

Download and install Cleanup

*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Please visit Microsoft's Window's Update Page and install the latest service packs, patchÂ’s and security updates for your system.

Recommended Protection Programs

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
  • WinPatrol to monitor any changes that programs make to the registry.

If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use:

In todayÂ’s world you MUST have an Antivirus program. If you do not have one, here are 3 FREE ones available for personal use:

Please take a look at these well written articles
Now..all that said...lets make sure nothing is lurking in the system..

Download Silent runners.Vbs http://www.silentrunners.org/
1. Make sure you have any script blocking software disabled
2. Run the program. It will take a few minutes to complete.
3. Once complete it will produce a log named “StartupPrograms” with Your user and date in the filename. Open that txt file and posts it contents in your next post.

Also reboot into safe mode...

Run Ewido:
  • Click [Scanner]
  • Click [Complete System Scan] to begin scanning.
  • Click [OK] when prompted to clean files
  • With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option - "Perform action on all infections" - & choose clean and click [OK].
  • Once finished, click the [Save report] button
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Boot back into normal windows and post the Ewido log.

Thanks for all the help guys. Here's the thing though, I do have my security settings on medium, and I've had Spyware Doctor, Macafee Firewall, Macafee Virus, Spybot, Popup blockers, CWShredder (these constantly run in the background) since I've had the computer to block any spyware. I've also had all my temp files deleted before (even the hidden content.ie5 files) using various programs. But everytime I completely clean my computer, check all programs (including registry) my Spyware Doctor will always scan and find more spyware in the Temp directories (later). I've pretty much done everything you guys have suggested, and more, to no avail. It just keeps coming back and I don't know how. There is nothing running in the background that shouldn't be running and I don't go to sites that would contain it (i.e. adult, warez, bittorrent). I've posted this same topic on other forums and no one was able to help me either. I'm pretty knowledgeable about computers and took proactive measures when I first bought this computer so that it wouldn't get plagued by spyware.

You say you have multiple scanners (spyware scanners/anti-virus scanners) running in the background, as well as this affecting your performance it affects the effectiveness of your spyware scans

you see when a scanner is scanning a item it becomes available and if that program cant detect some specific spyware it will ignore it and the other scan won't scan it while it is unavabile

either disable or get rid of some of your scanners and try one at a time and yes do a windows update because no matter if you have a firewall if you dont have the windows update it is kinda useless
