Precautions with Skype?

Are there any special precautions one must take when downloading using Skype (video calling?). Does that program have any weaknesses? What about Google Pinying (chinese translation?)

My wife uses these programs a lot, and I want to be careful. Our network was recently destroyed by viruses after four years of relative peace, and we are just rebuilding it.

There is alway a risk when using the internet and anything that relates to it. There is no program or software that is 100% safe.

Skype has had its flaws. But they seem pretty quick to patch it. Goggle is about the same.
