in my opinion the top 3 best are:
1) antiviruskit (uses 2 databases kaspersky/bitdefender so highly effective)
2) kaspersky (very high detection rate,identifies tons of executable packers/crypters,excellent malware detection)
3) nod32 (lightest on resources,identifies alot of executuable packers/crypters but not as much as kaskpersky , preety good malware detection , excellent herustics that can detect malware thats not in database in alot of cases
neither of em are free but well worth it
and the worst ones:
1) avg (low detection rate , doesnt identify any executable packers/crypters)
2) avast (same reasons as avg)
3) antivir (low detection rate , very low identification of executable packers/crypters)
4) norton (major resource hogger , low identification of executable packers/crypters)
5) panda (major resource hogger, low detection rate , low identification of executable packers/crypters)
whats malware? basicly malicious applications such as spyware/trojans/worms
now let me tell you why the support in executable packers/crypters is important , executable packers/crypters in short change the structure of selected executable files while leaving em in good shape , alot of malware applications are packed/crypted and if the antivirus is unable to identify the packer/crypter at all then its unlikely to catch it
i know some of you probably gonna reply something like "i got that antivirus on your worst list and i never had a virus" - theres a major diffrence between "i didnt got infected" to "i got infected but my antivirus missed it" - i recommend to all of you with one of the antiviruses in my worst list to scan online on these sites

i honestly dont think theres any good free antivirus , also antiviruses doesnt cut it anymore as there are various ways to get around em i recommend using system safety monitor
