what is this?

msconfig startup shows this:

hijackthislog shows it as this:

no scanner detects anything, both spyware and antivirus including online scans.
if i uncheck it from startup it reapears after reboot.
do the squares and symbols mean its encrypted or what causes that?

try spybot seach and destroy.
the teatimer on it may detect the registry change when it adds itself again and you can stop it from there.

also regseeker may be able to disable it from startup.

i got rid of it, it wasnt anything just my driver manager, didnt need it so i uninstalled it and all is well. it was confusing cause it looked encrypted but xp manager startup told me what it was so dunno why it looked encrypted in msconfig

Your Second Image......

Fix that entry using hijackthis. You need to remove it's entry from the win.ini file.

Your First Image....

You also have "Searchcentrix hijacker" showing in your MSConfig entrys...which means it's on the system. I would also recommend you post a HJT log so I can have a peek...as CoolWebSearch hijacker uses a simular entry.

thanks, i'll have another look
nothing odd appears to be running at startup anymore and i removed that reg entry.
suppose i might as well install a antispyware, i try to keep my installs to a minimum
