No icons!!

Trying to fix my in-laws computer. It had many issues. I removed all the virus' that were found. But i cannot get the desktop icons to reappear. I have tried the right click and arrange icons option and all options are greyed in cannot choose anything. I thought maybe all the icons just got deleted so i tried to re add something and it wont show up. Any suggestions.

To remove the virus, mcafee.

Well thats your problem right there.....

Run malwarebytes and post its log and then run hijackthis and post its log as well
