Looking for a virus scanner

Hello, I'm new to the forums. Sorry if this has been asked before but I wasn't able to find any info related to this topic.

I'm looking for either a very lightweight antivirus that doesn't run too many processes in the background or simply an independent program that I can use to scan singular files or folders without the added protection, is there such a program?

There are several such programs, I mostly use 'Spybot - Search & Destroy' and 'Malwarebytes Anti-Malware'. They are both free and run when you tell them to.

If you're also looking for an Anti-virus program I personally don't use one any more but I used to use AVG Free and liked it, there are other options, which you can find in this thread: http://www.techist.com/forums/f51/tech-forums-top-rated-antivirus-167005/

I'd recommend AVG for the resident shield, and Malwarebytes especially for periodic scanning, both free.

Spybot is good too, though I like to use it as a diagnostic more than a maintenance thing.

Also, while not a virus scanner, I recommend getting CCleaner, it cleans up junk files and unneeded registry entries and such.
