I've noticed lately that I have been getting a lot of emails with virus attachments and while browsing I've been getting more popups. Are there any link between the two?

Probably Sober and Netsky virus. I get them all the time lately.

Your computer might be infected with spyware.
Get CWShredder and scan with multiple spyware killers (spysweeper, spybots s&d)

What browser are you using?

i've been using firefox, it helps with the popups, also installed Adawaresafe, so far so good.
