Instal Windows update to restore infected files/ Bad HDD sectors....Help!!!

I have been told that I could remove viruses on the HDD with installing W7. I think Im lost, any ideas.

I also have what is said to be a bad HDD. but am getting conflicting ideas. How can find out. What sites will scan my drive for errors (not registry problems). I can find all the registry problem checkers all day but dont know which download I can get to see if there are bad sectors on my drive. I hate having so much to do, so little time and unreliable resources.

What's the purpose of installing Win7 just to get rid of an infection? Yes a format and install of an OS will kill the virus, but, that's true any time you install any OS after a format.

To check your hard drive, run chkdsk /r from cmd prompt.
