Infected via network?

Can a virus spread from one computer to another on a network? If one computer gets infected can it spread on its own to the rest of the pc's on the network?
I'm having an argument with a friend about this Thanks

I believe the term is "network aware" if the virus is network aware then it can spread through your network on its own. This is only a worry if the machines are not adequately protected but unfortunately this is a distinct possiblity since it is common to reduce the protection over the internal network in order to get services to work properly.
