Help! Stupid about:blank...grrrrr

Hi Ya'll and good morning,

I'm hoping someone can help me since McAfee, Dell and MS say I must blow the hard drive completely (ok..that didnt sound right...ya'll know what I mean) :confused: . 2 weeks ago I received a trojan - now I've gotten about 15 of them pop up - but McAfee catches them and says "Been deleted" - apparently not true huh? *sighs* I've gone into REGEDIT and nothing - no things are there according to the techs from all 3 companies that should be there to change my home page. My start page I did reset to what it was supposed to be, but it still goes to about:blank.

I've got adaware, McAfee, etc - all current, did all the MS fixes and patches - this is a brand new computer about 2 months old. I read in here last evening about CW Shredder (had that too - that cool page thingy...what a pain in the butt) - it detected and fixed it according to the program - but when I restarted it went right back to About:blank.

I'm confused and frustrated after 2 weeks of non-stop working on this thing. I dont want to reinstall my harddrive - what a waste of time to me it seems - but according to Techs (and I take this w/a grain of salt here) - apparently I have "no virus" since my AVS is up to date, but my registry keys are corrupted - I ask how when its not showing..they say "Uhmmmm.....they just are - reinstall everything."

First, create a folder for HijackThis in the root folder of your hard drive

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET , most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed. Wait for someone to analyze the scan and advise.
 
Hi Lobos - thanks for the reply - was trying to download a site you mentioned from a previous post but no luck, it locks up (Spybot S&D) for some reason... Ok...here's the log....have NO clue what i"m looking for..

did restart after running adaware so this should be the latest log...many hugs for helping me - you dont know how much its appreciated! :) Oh yeah - forgot to mention - ya ever get that stupid Casino Online thing? Its write-protected and I cant get rid of it no matter what I try....maybe you can tell me how to get rid of that too as I see it in the log..

We'll use the removal tools, first:

Click here to down load CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom, the creator of Hijack This
if you have it already update to V1.59.0
Run it, press 'Fix', and allow it to fix all it finds.
And remember to click "Fix" (Not "Scan only")

CWS installs via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM so just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once youÂ’ve run the above, it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended. It's the lack of the above patches that enabled you to get infected .

Run AdAware
Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file 01R319 15.06.2004 by clicking Check for updates now, and following the prompts.

Now to set it up for optimum performance...

Make sure the following settings are configured. Remember that ON=GREEN.

From main window click Start | Activate in-depth scan.

Then click Use custom scanning options | Customize and have these options switched ON...

Scan within archives
Scan active processes
Scan registryDeep scan registry
Scan my IE Favourites for banned URLs
Scan my host-files

Then click the Settings button.. (the gear icon on the top row) then Tweak | Scanning engine and check..

Unload recognised processes during scanning.
Cleaning engine.
Let windows remove files in use at next reboot.

and uncheck..

Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion.

Then click Proceed, to save your settings.

Now click the Scan button.

When scan is finished, check the little box to the left of each entry to select them for removal, and get rid of them

Restart your computer

Panda scan
RAV


Re-boot again.

Then post a new HijackThis log to check what is left
 
Ok - done....it detected 2 on PandaScan (mstasks1 . exe and MSlib32.dll) - With RAV it detected another, "Trojandownloader-Win32/QDown A0000731.dll" - Housecall didnt want to work for some reason. Did Autoclean as you stated, rebooted after doing each step and here is my new log.

Is it any better? LOL - lord knows I havent a clue what I'm looking for (Oh man, I owe ya big time if this worked you realize that dont ya? :p)

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
6. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
8. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
9. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
