On a recent Friday night, several hundred computer programmers and developers gathered in a Times Square hotel with the sole intent to hack something. The event, sponsored by Yahoo!, challenged teams to create small, unique programs, also known as hacks, during a 24 hour period and be able to present them for judging the following day.
The combination of creativity, sleep deprivation and deadline pressure provided some unique and humorous results. The following day the teams presented their overnight work. After two hours and over forty presentations, the judges made their decisions. Several of the top finishers were selected for their practicality, but most were selected for their creativity which arose from a caffeine-fueled all-nighter.
