funny anti virus activity

I was just surfing on IE 7 when out of nowhere this anti virus scan stars. In a matter of seconds it detected 431 possible items. I also had a screen appear with almost 900 trojans appear. Then a window popped up asking me to download a file " Alpha-Scan-ce-ce83_2024-7.exe" I have no idea how this happened. Is it a legit anti virus thing that IE runs or is it some BS. I immediately ran a scan with AVG. It is still running and after thirty minutes it has not found anything. I have to wonder though because at the same time my computer has not been performing as it should.
Any incite would be greatly appreciated.

Its garbage. Make sure you X out of it or kill it via task manager. Sometimes when you click No on them, it will still download. When this happens to me I kill the process in Task Manager.

That's just what I did. Also, no I'm not getting these messages any more.
