a firewall /router? I agree there nothing beats that, but the average user may not know what to look for could your please post the pros and cons.

Pro-
I would think the best reason for a hardware firewall would be to filter and route packets. really good for stopping brute force attacks.. but I could be off there.

Con-
Doesn't control malware that has been downloaded by the user.

A hardware firewall stops attacks before t hey get to the computer. And blocking malware is what an antivirus/antispyware program is for.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a "hardware firewall"? Thanks.

I should add that yesterday when I scanned for Conficker, the Norton that is not recommended here did in fact check for Conficker and report my PC clean.

A hardware firewall is just as it sounds: hardware rather than software. Can be built into a router or a separate box entirely. It filters attacks even before they can get to your computer.
