Just so happens that CR rated the leading programs in the last issue. For antivirus the only freebie that works effectively (according to their tests) is Alwill Avast. It was not the best. According to CR that would be 1) BitDefender 2) Zone Labs 3) Kaspersky Labs 4) Norton 5) McAfee 6) Trend Micro.
Personally I use Symantec Corporate. Never had a virus, never will besue I do not go to bogus sites or download "freebies", file share or go to porno or gambling sites. I also never use Internet Explorer either, I use Opera.
For firewall I use plain old Zone Alarm. System has been free and clear as long as it has been in service. That goes for all my systems.
