Do USB drives get infected?

Alright. I'd like a nice USB drive for christmas, but my parents are concerned that when I go and help my friends with virus problems's, that as soon as I plug in the Thumbnail drive, it'll get infected as well.

I think this is bogus. But I have to tell them something cause their totally tech illiterate.

So what good reasons would make it really really hard for something like this too happen.

I'm not sticking their files on the usb drive, only transferring mine.
 
As long as you don't run the files from the USB drive, you almost certainly won't. We have used ours as you are speaking for over a year without any virus infection issues.
 
Actually, maybe it could happen because one of my friends had an infected USB drive. (Whenever he plugged it in the pc, the virus scanner would warn that there is a virus) However, this seems to be very rare because me and my other friends have had USB drives for pretty long with no problems.
