Could email attachment be result of virus

Hello,

I recently received emails from an aquaintance, the first e-mail had several pictures of their kids, dog etc attached by my acquaintance. The second e-mail had a message and a couple of links from my 'friend' but it also had a rather nasty bondage picture attached to it.

Does anyone know if a virus is capable of attaching to / or interfering with an e-mail that you are in the process of writing / sending as my 'friend' claims or are they just a nasty freak trying to excuse sending me unsolicited porn?

Get you a antivirus program that scans your email before you open it!!
