Conficker is Still a Hot Topic

The Conficker Worm was a source of much discussion at the RSA Conference last week. From the alleged $9.1 Billion price tag to theories for the wormís existence, itís apparent that the malware is still very much in the active thinking for people concerned with cyber-security. Meanwhile, Reuters reports that Conficker is slowly assimilating infected PCs into a botnet.

At the conference, held in San Francisco April 20 to 24, researchers expressed mixed opinions about whether the fear generated by hype about Conficker was useful or harmful. Weeks after the worm's "big day" of April 1, however, researchers can still only speculate as to what will happen when the latest variant, widely known as Conficker.E but also known as Downadup.E, reaches its "untrigger date" in May.

Is this thing the largest-ever deployment of a worm or virus ? It is extremely well-written code according to experts, but many sources say that regular Windows updates took care of it back in like October of last year (for people that had their Windows Updates enabled). Lesson that should have been learned: Updates regularly !!
