Common Sense.
There isn't really a "best" AV that will beat out being smart about what you're doing. A lot of people on here don't even run an AV.
That being said... for a non-bias review of AV's: AV-Comparatives Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software » AV-Comparatives
They do tests each year and post their findings in a nice report.
