I am working on a XP Home machine with a similar problem. I got some of the programs to run and Antivir2009 seems to be gone. However, MalWarebytes won't run, smitfraudfix won't run, combofix won't run. It will not boot to safe mode either. It acts like it is going to, gets to the black screen with the words safe mode in the corners, the mouse cursor will move, but nothing else happens. I haven't tried Hijackthis yet. I am running Avast right now. It also doesn't want to connect and update Avast and I downloaded defraggler but it won't run either. Says building file list failed. The windows defrag craps out as well saying chkdsk is scheduled to run and then tells me to run it. So I have. Several times. I'll try to get a hijack log up.
