Web pages not displayed correctly

Why do web pages load with fuzzy pictures and fonts and very little color ie missing pictures and no background color? All colors are clear in Windows. Even the browser IE is clear. I am running Windows XP. Any help will be appreciated.

No, I can't post a screen shot tonight. I'm not on the troubled machine at this time. The truth is that it belongs to a friend of mine. I've been troubleshooting it for her. I spent quite a while trying to figure the problem out earlier today.
Is there something I might try without a screen shot?

Perhaps a virus of some sort?

Nope, no wifi at all. She is on dial up. I am wondering if it could be driver related. It seems she's had this problem since she purchased the computer 2 years ago. She has grown accostumed to it, I guess. She doesn't seem to realize what she's missing, but it drives me crazy when I visit her. She doesn't have tech support from the manufacturer so calling them isn't an option.
