In my company we use a web based application that is at a web site inside the company firewall and I use a web address r01scrclaapp01. How can that be a valid web address there is no .com, .gov, .net, .org or .edu?

You are looking at it all wrong. It isnt really a web address. You are using what is called an intranet, not an internet address. So you are calling information up from the Network, not from the internet. It is the same thing where i work. I can bring up information in the browser, but they are just from teh servers located upstairs or located within the company, using a WAN.

Since it is an intranet, you dont need the .anything as it is not being broadcast to the public on the general domain which would require the Domain Name Servers, or DNS, to have to have access to them.
