What is a virtual directory and why does it not let itself be listed?

A virtual directory is a directory that references one or more physical directories and, optionally, other virtual directories. I'm not sure why it's not listed.

so a virtual directory would create a structure which is actually virtual, i.e. just at that place, and in actuality might not even be a filed directory structure in the first place but could also be an unhierarchiical flat structure, right?
