Uploading without downloading

This is probably a very simple question, but I'm stumped on how it might be done.

What I'm asking is is it possible to upload something to an online service - say, Gmail - without downloading it to your computer first? When I'm away from my laptop and there's no convient method of file transfer, I'm forced to wait for the file to download and then wait again while it uploads. =\

So I guess this is really two questions. First, would going straight from download to upload actually solve my problem?

Secondly, regardless, how would one go about doing this? Would it have something to do with scripting, maybe?

Basically it is possible, BUT
you need to get the file from and ftp server that you have access to,
or an online directory or something like that.
Can you explain in details what you are trying to do, and maybe we could be more helpful...
