I must preface by saying that I am still learning the internet and its terminology. The last two months, my PC (Windows XP) has been occasionally freezing. I also got the never-ending hour glass. Then it became worse: I often couldn't get out of a website unless I restarted. I called SBC Yahoo DSL. Over several days, they had me make several adjustments. It helped only a little. During this time, I also installed Office XP with Publisher. Following the Yahoo fiasco (or was it the Office XP?!), things became horrible. I would visit a web site, and everything would freeze, turn gray, and even "control+alt+delete" would not go anywhere. A friend came over, installed Ad Aware, and told me the proper way to disk clean and defrag. Everything has been excellent ever since. However, since working with the phone reps at SBC Yahoo (or installing Office XP), I have been deluged with something that I never had before: Pop-up ads from Explorer. Sometimes these things list what I believe is my IP address on them. My friend thought that since she installed Ad Aware, AND got rid of the VX2, these ads would stop. They have only slowed down. Can anyone help?

hyepod,

I'm Liz and welcome to Tech Forums. I'm going to see if we can get rid of those popups for you. I suspect you have an older copy of AdAware so the one I'm going to have you get is a new one.

Go here and follow these instructions on how to remove a program: http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm#add_remove

You have AdAware and/or Spybot istalled and have you run
them? And have you run a virus scan today? If so, what did it tell you?

If not, do a virus scan with your A/V (antivirus) and let us know what it says.

Then go here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Create a folder on your hard drive somewhere like in "My Documents" or in My Programs but NOT on the desktop or in a temporary folder. That creates problems if you do. and name it Hijackthis unzip'Hijack This to that folder. Doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.

Press that, save the log, load it in Notepad, and copy its contents in the HiJack Logs (analyze) Forums. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT fix anything yet.

Then Please download Adaware from the link below first http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html Scan it with your A/V first, then Install it and & update it B4 scanning. In settings under 'scanning,' have it set to

'scan within archives,'

'scan active processes,'

'scan registry,'

'deepscan registry'

'scan my IE Favorites for banned URL's,'

'scan my host's file.'

In 'tweaks' under 'scanning engine' set it to 'unload recognized processes

during scanning.' Also in 'tweaks' under 'cleaning engine' set it to

'Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion' & 'let Windows

remove files in use at next reboot.'

Select 'activate in-depth scan' before starting scan.

When the scan is finished select 'next.'

Remove what it finds by placing a check in the box to the left of the object.

Reboot

Download Spybot Search & Destroy.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Scan it with your A/V program before installing it. Install the program and launch it. Before scanning press Online and Search for Updates. Put a check mark at and install all updates. Click Check for Problems and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds marked in RED.

Restart your computer, post another Hijack This log. Liz

No need to BUY something when we have good tools that can be used for FREE. HiJack This is a good tool in the right hands. Simon, if he downloads and runs HiJack This and lets me read it, I will be able to clean his computer without his having to pay for something. Liz

Sudden pop-ups

Liz, I want to thank you for all of your help. I installed everything per your directions. My techie friend helped me along. I also installed Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster. My virus scans come up clean. In any case, this is the latest: I have many recurrent problems with "VX2", "Redirected hostfile entry", and "Tracking cookie". These are the top offenders. I am now very diligent in running scans, checking for updates, etc. However, I am STILL getting these Explorer pop-ups. This morning, I noticed that I had a shortcut for "Online dating" and one for some casino. Additionally, sometimes when I'm online and click on any link to anywhere, I wait a long time, and end up seeing the "Page cannot be found" note. My computer is also occasionally RESTARTING on its own now! I am pulling my hair out. Any suggestions? I hate to do this, but here is a Hijack This log (Thank you-Thank you! Karen):
