I'm curious to know how well hotspot shield will protect sensitive info from snooping by hackers, government authorities, etc .

The hotspot shield website isn't that forthcoming.

It clearly states that browsing is anonymous. How about downloads? Torrents?

Is Hotspot shield a good choice? Are there better VPNs?

I'd appreciate your feedback.

I think this is a very grey area to discuss around here... I will just give some information, nothing more.

If it isn't encrypted, anyone can see the connection, the "VPN" is just a proxy at that point. Even IF it was encrypted, most all VPN services will log connection data for a period of time in the event someone is doing something illegal and the FBI comes knocking on their door, they have a way out with them logs.

No one is truely anon on the internet, ever, you also have no reason for such services unless you are violating a law in your country, or are working on a corporate network, which at that point the corp would offer the connection, so we can only conclude your using VPN/Encryption for illegal services. BTW, trust me, THEY ALL keep logs, whether or not the logs can be exposed is a different matter.
